A Palestinian man was shot dead by an Israeli during a settler attack on a village in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday evening.
A relative said Alaa Khalid Subeih, 28, was killed as he tried to defend a greenhouse from the settlers in Tayasir, in the northern West Bank. A senior UN official also stated he was shot by a settler.
The Israeli military reported that he was shot by an off-duty soldier who accused Subeih of throwing stones.
Tayasir has recently seen an uptick in violence from settlers, as Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are considered illegal under international law.
This incident has occurred amidst warnings from former security personnel regarding government-sponsored Jewish terrorism and reports that the Israeli government approved dozens of new settlements in the region. Tayasir is specifically in an area of the West Bank that falls under the security control of the Palestinian Authority.
Last month, a CNN crew covering related violence was detained by Israeli soldiers, prompting questions about the treatment of journalists in conflict zones.
Saeb Subeih, Alaa's cousin, described him as a kind and respectful person who was dedicated to his community. He lamented that Alaa's body had not yet been returned to his family, emphasizing that this gesture could help ease their grief.
Ajith Sunghay from the UN Human Rights Office expressed concerns over the rising settler violence and indicated that Israel's government has effectively granted settlers complete impunity.
Witness accounts indicate a pattern of increased aggressiveness from settlers, coinciding with shifting attention due to the ongoing conflict in Iran. The UN has reported 206 incidents of settler violence in March alone, emphasizing the growing tensions in the region.
This incident underscores a broader critique of Israel's approach towards West Bank settlements, with numerous calls for addressing the legal and ethical ramifications of this violence amid ongoing territorial disputes.
