PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Federal immigration officers shot and wounded two people outside a hospital in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday, a day after an officer shot and killed a driver in Minnesota, authorities said.
The FBI’s Portland office stated they are investigating an agent involved shooting that occurred around 2:15 p.m. The Portland Police Bureau reported that officers initially responded to reports of a shooting near a hospital.
A few minutes later, police received details that a man who had been shot was seeking assistance in another area a couple of miles away. Officers responded and discovered two individuals with apparent gunshot wounds, determining they were injured in the incident involving federal agents.
Their conditions remain unknown. Council President Elana Pirtle-Guiney addressed city council members, noting that the shooting took place in the eastern part of the city and that both victims are residents of Portland. As far as we know both of these individuals are still alive and we are hoping for more positive updates throughout the afternoon, she remarked.
This shooting follows another distressing incident where an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed a woman in Minnesota, escalating tensions in a city with a historically contentious relationship with President Trump, including his recent failed efforts to deploy National Guard troops in the region.
Portland police secured the scene, ensuring the area remains protected as investigations progress. We are still in the early stages of this incident, stated Chief Bob Day, urging the community to remain calm amid rising emotions following the shooting in Minneapolis.
Local officials are calling for ICE to cease operations in Portland until a thorough investigation is complete. Their joint statement emphasizes that the city's authorities cannot stand by as constitutional protections are compromised, condemning the militarization of federal agents in urban localities.
Portland is not a ‘training ground’ for militarized agents, and the threatened full force by the administration has deadly consequences, the officials warned. They also called for residents to remain composed and principled during this difficult time.
U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley urged peaceful protests, cautioning against reactions that could lead to unrest, asserting, Trump wants to generate riots. Don’t take the bait.\
