MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Federal officials and local leaders clashed Wednesday over their differing characterizations of a fatal shooting by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis. While President Donald Trump’s administration described the killing of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Macklin Good as an act of self-defense amid his latest immigration crackdown, Minneapolis officials have disputed that narrative.
Here’s what is known about the shooting:
The woman was shot in her car in a residential neighborhood south of downtown Minneapolis, about a mile from where police killed George Floyd in 2020. Bystander videos shared on social media show an officer approaching a stopped SUV, demanding the driver open the door. As the vehicle began to move, another ICE officer pulled his weapon and fired multiple shots at close range. It’s unclear if the vehicle made contact with the officer, but the SUV then crashed into nearby parked cars.
Macklin Good, identified as a “poet, writer, wife, and mom” on social media, succumbed to gunshot wounds. Videos from the scene indicate she was married to a woman and the couple had a child. Her death has intensified public outcry, becoming at least the fifth case linked to the aggressive ICE operations under the Trump administration.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the actions of the officer involved, describing him as experienced and stating that he acted in self-defense based on his training. However, local leaders, including Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, have challenged this narrative. Frey criticized the significant federal presence in the city, emphasizing that such actions separate families and create chaos, resulting in tragic outcomes such as this shooting.
