WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President JD Vance on Thursday blamed a federal immigration officer’s fatal shooting of a Minneapolis woman on 'a left-wing network,' Democrats, and the news media, as protests over her death expanded across the United States.
In a rare appearance at the White House briefing room, Vance quickly assigned culpability to the left while the investigation into the shocking incident involving 37-year-old Renee Good is still ongoing. Good was shot and killed by an ICE officer while attempting to flee on a snowy Minneapolis street during a law enforcement operation tied to the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
Vance dismissed concerns over prejudging the investigation, claiming the video he reviewed clearly depicts Good acting aggressively towards the officer. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, however, countered, labeling the self-defense claims as 'garbage.'
Vance expressed sadness for Good, whom he called 'brainwashed' and a 'victim of left-wing ideology,' suggesting that her death was a tragedy brought on by her actions and those of a larger, radical movement against law enforcement. He defended the actions of the ICE officer amid similar statements from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and President Donald Trump, who claimed the officer’s response was justified.
The vice president accused the media of portraying Good as 'innocent' and stated that the coverage of the incident has endangered law enforcement officers by inciting public outrage. He concluded that to lower tensions, the challenges surrounding immigration should be addressed through the electoral process. Additionally, he announced plans to appoint a new assistant attorney general to combat perceived fraud in Minnesota's government assistance programs, further asserting the government’s commitment to strict immigration enforcement policies.
Protests related to the shooting have surged nationwide, underscoring the escalating tensions on immigration and law enforcement practices in the country.
