Trump plans Florida golf club as new presidential retreat
President Donald Trump has announced plans to convert his Trump International Golf Club into a presidential retreat, offering the property to future presidents for free and hosting foreign dignitaries at no cost to the federal government.
The club would cover all construction and maintenance expenses as a “gift” to the American people, Trump said, and the property would become a “U.S. Presidential Golf Course.” He notes its proximity to the airport and lack of tall buildings, claiming these factors make it extremely secure.
Trump likened the idea to Camp David, describing his proposal as a modern, sophisticated alternative to the rustic retreat that has hosted presidents since the 1930s. The plan echoes past White House projects, including the Oval Office’s gold leafed rooms and the planned triumphant arch.
According to a letter from the golf club’s attorney, the facility would grant free membership to all future presidents and provide accommodations for visiting heads of state, all while keeping the site “ahead of any security threat.” The Secret Service approved the concept, and Trump has described the location as “about as safe as they could possibly get.”
The proposal raises questions about the blending of private property and official presidential housing and how such a move fits within the broader tradition of presidential retreats.
