At least 21 people have died after a passenger boat sank in River Nile state in northern Sudan, a medical group has reported. The boat was traveling between the villages of Tayba al-Khawad and Deim al-Qarai, carrying nearly 30 passengers, including women, elderly people, and children. Dr Mohamed Faisal Hassan from the Sudan Doctors Network stated that rescue teams are actively searching for more victims as the recovery operation continues. Eyewitnesses mentioned that the boat capsized due to high waves in the Shendi area on Wednesday evening. Authorities reported the recovery of 21 bodies, and six people managed to survive. The medical group has called for specialized rescue teams to expedite search efforts and urged authorities to implement safety measures for river transport, as many boats are privately owned and lack regulation. This incident highlights the dangers of river travel in Sudan, where accidents are common due to limited infrastructure like bridges.
