Seventeen people suffered injuries when a tourist train tipped over in the Spanish town of Cártama during its annual Ruta de la Tapa y el Cóctel festival.

The crash occurred after 21:30 local time (20:30 BST) on Saturday. Earliest accounts say the train was turning at a crossing on Santo Cristo road.

Emergency teams reached the scene within minutes, treating passengers and transporting four – including three children – to a nearby hospital. Authorities say none of the victims sustained serious wounds.

The free tourist train, part of the festival that encourages visitors to sample local tapas and cocktails, carried about 30 passengers at the time of the incident.

The service has been suspended for the weekend while investigators look into the cause of the overturn.

The town of Cártama lies 17 km from Málaga and 44 minutes from Marbella, making it a popular stop for visitors to southern Spain.
