Woman Severely Injured After Shark Bite at Coogee Beach
Police were called to Coogee Beach this morning after an incident involving a shark attack on a 35‑year‑old woman. She suffered serious injuries to her arm and leg, according to the New South Wales Police.
The victim was rescued by members of the public and received immediate first aid before being airlifted by helicopter to a hospital. Several surrounding beaches were closed for safety checks.
A witness, Nicola Logan, described seeing a “massive pool of blood” in the water and frantic attempts to pull the victim to shore. She later saw a ski paddler attempting to assist.
Shark attacks in Australia are relatively frequent, though fatalities are less common. Since 1791, there have been nearly 1,300 recorded attacks across the country, including 260 deaths.
Security measures at popular Australian surf spots aim to reduce such incidents, but local authorities continue to urge visitors to remain vigilant.
