The 'Rolexgate' investigation gained traction after a news report highlighted the expensive timepieces Boluarte wore publicly, leading to a police raid on her home in March 2024. Authorities were searching for a collection of luxury watches that she had allegedly failed to declare. The president's request for additional time to respond to a subpoena for proof of purchase was denied, escalating the situation. The government's subsequent description of the raid as "disproportionate and unconstitutional" added to the controversy. Boluarte has maintained that she entered the government "with clean hands" and emphasized the legality of her Rolex acquisition.

In addition to the Rolex allegations, Boluarte is under scrutiny for a separate incident concerning her unexplained absence during a two-week period in 2023, during which she underwent nose surgery without delegating her responsibilities. Boluarte succeeded Pedro Castillo, who was impeached after attempting to dissolve Congress, an action that led to violent protests resulting in numerous fatalities. Upcoming presidential and legislative elections in Peru are scheduled for April 2026.
