ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — Two people are dead and one person wounded after a shooting at a South Carolina State University residential complex, the university has reported. The incident prompted a lockdown lasting nearly eight hours, which was lifted early Friday.

University officials have not confirmed the identities of the victims or the condition of the wounded individual in their news release Thursday night.

The campus lockdown began around 9:15 p.m. when the shooting was reported, with the lockdown finally lifted around 5 a.m. Friday.

Kaya Mack, who had just completed a food delivery on campus, described the moment she heard gunshots and saw numerous police officers responding to the incident.

“I wasn’t sure where the shots were coming from,” she told WLTX-TV. “Their loud sirens kind of shook me. We were all looking around, like ‘What’s going on?’”

Authorities are actively investigating the scene, and law enforcement is patrolling the campus and surrounding areas. The university has requested the State Law Enforcement Division to handle the investigation. An email for comments was sent to a spokesperson for further details.

As a result of the shooting, Friday classes were canceled, and the university is offering counseling services to students in need.
