The Trump administration on Thursday revoked a scientific finding that climate change poses a danger to public health, with President Donald Trump labeling it as 'a scam.' However, a plethora of scientific studies indicate that climate change is a significant and quantifiable threat to public health, resulting in thousands of diseases and deaths each year.
Initially established in 2009 under the Obama administration, the Environmental Protection Agency's finding served as a legal foundation for various regulations combating global warming. Recent research overwhelmingly concludes that climate change is continuously becoming more dangerous to human health.
A notable study published in the JAMA journal revealed an alarming trend: heat-related deaths in the U.S. have more than doubled from 1,069 in 1999 to a record-breaking 2,325 in 2023. A 2021 study reviewed data from 732 locations across 43 countries and determined that human-caused climate change is responsible for over one-third of heat-related deaths.
Experts in climate health warn that the detrimental impacts of climate change extend far beyond heat incidents, also contributing to a range of health issues such as waterborne infections, respiratory ailments, and even nutritional deficiencies due to changing environmental conditions. Some research has calculated that climate-related health costs could exceed $10 billion annually.
Dr. Howard Frumkin, a prominent public health expert, criticized the administration's decision to revoke the endangerment finding, equating it to denying established scientific facts, such as gravity. In contrast, Trump's administration claims that the connection between climate change and public health is unfounded.
According to Dr. Jonathan Patz, recent attribution studies indicate that extreme weather events, such as the 2021 heat dome in the Northwest, were significantly exacerbated by climate change. The consensus among the scientific community is clear: human-induced climate change poses a significant threat to public health that cannot be overlooked.
