The recent crash of an Air Canada plane at LaGuardia Airport has claimed the lives of two pilots, identified as Antoine Forest, 30, from Québec, and Mackenzie Gunther, 24, who recently graduated from Seneca Polytechnic in Toronto. The incident took place at approximately 23:40 local time, resulting in a total of 41 injuries as passengers and crew were taken to hospitals. FAA Administrator Bran Bedford expressed deep sorrow over the loss of two promising young pilots at the start of their careers.
Forest had shown a lifelong passion for aviation, beginning to fly bush planes in 2018 before being hired by Jazz Aviation in late 2022. Gunther, having graduated in 2023, was also hired by Jazz soon after.
Eyewitness accounts and flight data indicate that the plane collided with a fire truck on the runway, leading to the tragic accident. Flight attendant Solange Tremblay survived the crash, ejected from the aircraft and found a distance away, while two firemen were also hospitalized due to injuries sustained in the crash.
Investigators are currently delving into the circumstances leading up to the incident, including communication with air traffic control, which had authorized both the aircraft and the fire truck to be on the same runway. There are growing concerns regarding the infrastructure of the air traffic control system and its ability to handle such situations, emphasizing the need for modernization in a high-pressure environment.
