A New York judge has approved the admission of certain critical evidence in the trial of Luigi Mangione, who is accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The ruling allows for the inclusion of a gun and writings found in Mangione's backpack following his 2024 arrest while suppressing other items obtained through what was deemed an improper search.

Judge Gregory Carro determined on Monday that evidence such as a magazine, cellphone, and passport, discovered during the arrest at a Pennsylvania McDonald's, were inadmissible due to their recovery in a warrantless search.

However, items retrieved during a lawful interrogation at the police station, including a handgun and a notebook, will be presented in court.

Additionally, Carro ruled that certain interactions between Mangione and officers must be excluded from the trial, specifically regarding questions about his false identity and fake identification.

Mangione is charged with second-degree murder, firearm offenses, and stalking related to the December 2024 shooting incident. He maintains a plea of not guilty.

Authorities apprehended him in Pennsylvania shortly after the incident following a nationwide manhunt. The state trial is anticipated to begin in September 2026, with judges and witnesses involved in meticulous discussions over evidence proceedings.
