The two Air Canada pilots killed when a plane crashed into a fire truck at LaGuardia Airport have been identified as Antoine Forest and Mackenzie Gunther. Local media reported that Forest was 30 years old and from Québec, while Gunther recently graduated from Seneca Polytechnic in Toronto in 2023. The tragic incident took place at 23:40 local time on Sunday, injuring 41 individuals who were taken to hospitals and shutting down the New York airport until Monday afternoon. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) administrator Bran Bedford expressed that 'it's an absolute tragedy that we're sitting here with their loss.' Forest, who learned to fly bush planes in Saguenay in 2018, had been hired by Air Canada in December 2022. Gunther joined Air Canada shortly after graduating, with Seneca Polytechnic lowering flags in his honor. The crash also injured two officers inside the fire truck involved. Investigations revealed that both the plane and fire truck were cleared to cross the runway simultaneously, leading to critical safety concerns that have recently been voiced within the air traffic control sector.
