Three killed in Mexico City World Cup celebrations

Mexico City fans celebrate after 2-0 win against Ecuador
More than one million people took to the streets of Mexico City following Mexico's win over Ecuador in the World Cup knockout stages.

A 19‑year‑old woman, a 48‑year‑old woman and a 44‑year‑old man were killed by suffocation during celebrations that erupted across Mexico City after the national football team’s 2‑0 victory over Ecuador.

City health authorities noted that after providing first aid and performing CPR on the victims, they were transported to hospitals for specialised care. All three victims were confirmed by their families to have died from suffocation.

The death toll comes against the backdrop of a citywide rush in which more than one million people gathered mainly around the Angel of Independence monument to mark Mexico’s first World Cup knockout win since 1986.

Clara Brugada Molina, head of Mexico City’s government, expressed her sincere condolences to the families and pledged support in the coming days. The government urged calm and police presence during the festivities to prevent further incidents.
