Bolivia military barracks blast kills two and injures 81

A pyrotechnic mishap at an artillery regiment’s barracks near Viacha, 30 km from La Paz, left at least two soldiers dead, 81 injured and seven still missing.

Defence Minister Ernesto Justiniano said the explosion happened around 14:30 local time (18:30 GMT). He reported 81 injuries and urged caution as the risk of a secondary blast remains.

Health minister Rita Nebraska estimated between ten and fifteen fatalities. Authorities warned residents to keep 150‑metre distance from the base.

The governor and President Rodrigo Paz expressed deep solidarity, pledging a transparent, technical investigation. Police blamed stored fireworks as the likely trigger.

Local officials declared a three‑day mourning period for the victims.
