In parallel, the Philippines Defense Minister, Gilberto Teodoro Jr, criticized China's actions in the South China Sea, labeling them as "irresponsible and reckless." Teodoro expressed that China’s appropriation of the sea's territories is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated by the international community. He called for an ongoing commitment from the United States and European allies to uphold the rules-based order in defense of smaller nations threatened by aggressive powers.
Moreover, Marles addressed discussions initiated by US officials regarding military spending against perceived threats from China. He confirmed Australia's willingness to enhance its defense spending, partially aimed at initiatives under the trilateral security pact AUKUS, which focuses on bolstering submarine capabilities among Australia, the UK, and the US.
