Pro-Palestinian activists say Israeli forces have intercepted a flotilla of more than 50 boats carrying aid for Gaza in international waters west of Cyprus. The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) stated that its fleet was boarded in what it termed 'another illegal, high-seas aggression' roughly 250 nautical miles from Gaza, which is under an Israeli maritime blockade. Video streams from the GSF depicted commandos boarding several boats. Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, claimed that the raid effectively neutralized a plan intended to breach the isolation imposed on Hamas in Gaza. This incident follows a previous interception where Israeli forces detained 181 activists, most of whom were later released, except for two who were deported after being held for ten days. The latest flotilla departed from the Turkish port of Marmaris, aiming to provide humanitarian aid, including food and medical supplies, to Palestinians amid deteriorating living conditions in Gaza. However, Israel insists that its blockade remains lawful, citing the ongoing conflict with Hamas, which began with a deadly attack by the group in October 2023, leading to widespread casualties. Activists have called such interceptions piracy and demand international intervention to secure safe passage for humanitarian missions.
