European leaders say intensive work will continue in the coming days on a US-led plan to end the Russia-Ukraine war, after a joint phone call with President Donald Trump.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said they agreed that this was a critical moment - for Ukraine, its people and for shared security across the Euro-Atlantic region.
A White House official confirmed the call took place but did not provide details.
This comes a day after Trump labeled European leaders as weak and hinted that the US could reduce its support for Ukraine.
In a recent Politico interview, Trump claimed Ukraine was using war to avoid elections, prompting President Volodymyr Zelensky to state he was ready for them.
Russian President Vladimir Putin began a large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and Moscow currently occupies approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory.
The three European leaders released identical statements following their call with Trump, expressing support for US-led peace talks aimed at achieving a lasting peace for Ukraine and ending the violence.
Earlier on Wednesday, Zelensky mentioned that a 20-point document on a potential resolution to the war would be provided to the US soon, following joint efforts with Trump’s team and European partners.
The Ukrainian president is exerting significant diplomatic pressure through discussions with European allies to prevent the US from supporting terms that could leave Ukraine vulnerable to future Russian aggression.
The Kremlin noted that Trump's views on Ukraine align with its own narratives regarding territory and the status of military operations in Ukraine.
