Salwan Momika, an Iraqi expatriate in Sweden whose Quran-burning incident incited widespread protests in 2023, has been confirmed dead by the Swedish Prosecution Authority. The police reported that five individuals have been arrested while a murder inquiry is underway. Though the Stockholm police refrained from definitively stating that Momika had been shot, they acknowledged an incident late Wednesday in Sodertalje, a nearby city. The prosecution later identified the deceased individual as Momika.

The authorities have withheld information linking his death to the Quran-burning incident, which drew international outrage and tumultuous demonstrations across the Muslim world, particularly in Sweden. Mr. Momika ignited anger after he set fire to the Quran outside a mosque during a significant Islamic holy day. He professed that his act aimed to highlight the persecution of Christian minorities by Islamist factions in various Muslim-majority regions.

His actions prompted significant backlash against the Swedish government, where many Muslims expressed discontent over the lack of intervention during the protest. Despite condemnation from officials regarding Momika's anti-Muslim rhetoric, they attributed their inability to act to Swedish laws on free expression. It was noted that while a permit for his gathering had been issued, it specifically prohibited the burning of objects in Stockholm. Following the event, he faced charges for inciting hatred against an ethnic or national group, as stated by the prosecutor Rasmus Oman.
