The new family-friendly film broke records and garnered significant interest, with half of its revenue generated from North America alone.

Warner Bros' Minecraft Movie has debuted with an impressive $300 million in worldwide earnings over its opening weekend. After years of anticipation and multiple delays, the film hit theaters on Friday and features a lineup of stars including Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Jennifer Coolidge. Despite its production budget of $150 million, the movie's revenues comfortably exceed expectations.

According to EntTelligence, approximately 50% of the box office takings emerged from North America, a significant accomplishment given the film’s mixed critical reception. The Telegraph rated it two stars, lamenting the absence of the game’s inherent charm, while The Guardian only awarded one star for its disjointed narrative. Nevertheless, audiences flocked to theaters, contributing to remarks from Steve Buck, EntTelligence's chief strategy officer, who noted the film’s strong family appeal, particularly among fathers and younger viewers.

"It's the largest domestic opening of 2025 and Warner Bros’ biggest since 2023," Buck reported, highlighting the movie's unexpected success. Minecraft, a colossal success in the gaming world with over 300 million copies sold, inspired a story centered around four misfits who are transported through a mysterious portal to the Overworld, a familiar setting for avid players.

As game-to-film adaptations often struggle, some have succeeded remarkably, like Sonic the Hedgehog and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Jack Black, one of the film's stars, expressed awareness of the pressure to meet fans' expectations, pointing to the game’s enduring popularity and its generational significance.
