In brief
Singapore has announced a new solar target of 4 GWp by 2035, building on a previous 3 GWp goal for 2030. The Energy Market Authority will revise its Solar Photovoltaic Roadmap, explore a one‑stop digital portal for homeowners, and assess the electricity network to accommodate increased solar flows. The plan reflects the country’s effort to maximise solar use within its limited land.
Singapore announced on 28 October 2026 that it will push its solar deployment to 4 gigawatt‑peak (GWp) by 2035, an increase from the 3 GWp target set for 2030. The move comes as the city‑state seeks to maximise renewable energy within its cramped land area.
The Energy Market Authority (EMA) will update its Solar Photovoltaic Roadmap, last revised in 2020, to identify new installation sites across different surfaces, including commercial rooftops, utility‑grade solar arrays and open spaces. The updated plan will also chart medium‑to‑long‑term development pathways for solar power installation in Singapore.
To encourage residential uptake, the EMA will roll out a one‑stop digital portal that will provide homeowners with solar‑related information, connect them with suppliers, and simplify the group purchase process. The website will serve as a single point of access for people looking to install solar panels on private landed homes.
The authority will also evaluate the capacity of the electricity network in landed residential estates to ensure it can handle increased solar input. If needed, the grid will be upgraded to allow seamless integration of the added solar power and maintain supply reliability across the city‑state.
Puah Kok Keong, chief executive of the Energy Market Authority, said:
With Singapore's land constraints, we need to make the most of every opportunity to harness solar energy.
Previous comments from a 2025 media briefing reiterated the ambition, with the policy makers noting the 4 GWp goal as a milestone on the country’s renewable energy roadmap. The Straits Times also reported on 27 October that Singapore had announced the new solar target for 2035.
The increased target reflects Singapore’s broader strategy to diversify its energy mix amid rising fuel prices and changing global supply dynamics. By integrating more solar power, the country aims to reduce its reliance on imported fossil fuels and enhance its energy security.
