In brief
In a strong statement, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III has urged Israel to scale back its military strikes in and around Beirut, citing alarming civilian casualties amidst ongoing conflicts in Lebanon.
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III publicly criticized Israel on Saturday, stating that the civilian casualties resulting from its military operations in Lebanon are “far too high.” In an appeal for moderation, Austin suggested that Israel should reduce airstrikes particularly in densely populated areas, especially near the capital, Beirut. His comments mark a significant stance from a senior U.S. official regarding the ongoing violence.Austin's remarks came as Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati indicated that his government perceived a “sort of guarantee” from the Biden administration that Israel would enhance their operations to avoid civilian areas. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre further supported this position, remarking that the administration conveyed opposition to almost daily strikes in crowded regions of Beirut. She stressed the importance of conducting military actions in a manner that safeguards civilians, even as Israel claims its operations are focused on dismantling Hezbollah's military capabilities.Following Jean-Pierre's statements, Israeli military actions appeared somewhat restrained around Beirut; however, reports confirmed renewed fierce strikes in the Dahiya neighborhood, where Hezbollah maintains a significant presence. This latest wave of bombardment was among the most intense in recent days.In addition to addressing the situation in Lebanon, Austin commented on humanitarian efforts in Gaza, stating that there have been steps taken to ameliorate a severe decline in humanitarian aid. He and Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken had recently warned Israeli officials that a lack of increased humanitarian assistance to Gaza could result in consequences, including potential reductions in U.S. security aid.Meanwhile, during a security meeting with Group of 7 representatives in Naples, Italy, Austin expressed relief that a drone, reportedly launched from Lebanon towards Israeli PM Netanyahu's residence, did not cause any injuries. The ongoing tensions in the region continue to raise international concerns about stability and civilian safety.
