A magnitude‑5.4 earthquake rattled Chiba Prefecture early Sunday morning, with the Japanese Meteorological Agency signaling a lower‑5 intensity on its seismic scale. The shock’s epicenter was recorded near the city of Kisarazu, in the southeastern corner of the prefecture.

In the hours after the quake, local officials released statements that no injuries had been reported and there was no evidence of major damage to buildings or infrastructure. Fire departments, police and emergency medical services were dispatched as a precaution, but they found only a few rippling tremors and scattered dust.

Residents in Kisarazu and surrounding communities reported a sudden, brief jolt that caused papers to fall and furniture to rattle. Many described the sensation as a “tremor in the ground,” but no one felt the shaking long enough to be frightened or to leave their homes.

Chiba Prefecture lies on the eastern edge of Honshu, just east of Tokyo, and is home to more than 6.7 million people. The area includes industrial zones, residential neighborhoods and dense forests. The morning quake rattled a region that regularly endures small seismic swarms, but this event was the most intense in the area since a 5.0 tremor in February.

Japan’s national disaster preparedness system is renowned for its quick response. In this case, emergency warning systems were activated to alert residents, but the warnings triggered only a brief pause in transport and a short lull in office activities.

Officials noted that the lower‑5 intensity, while not damaging, can still induce a perceptible shake. As of the latest update, the National Police Agency confirmed that no casualties had occurred and that building inspections have not found cracks or structural failures.

For residents who lived through larger quakes in previous years, the recent tremor served as a reminder of the country’s constant seismic activity. However, with the rapid reporting of no injuries, the incident was largely a routine event for emergency services.

Local schools in the affected district remain open, with teachers noting that the students were calm and cooperative. The mayor of Kisarazu expressed thanks to the emergency teams for their prompt coordination.
