In brief
Laos’s October inflation rate eased to 7.7%, down from 7.8% in September, as costs of electricity, fuel and food climbed. The biggest jump was in housing, water, electricity and gas at 29.6%. The central bank plans to keep inflation below 7% by 2026, aiming for macro‑economic stability.
In October 2026, Laotian households faced a 7.7 percent inflation rate, down from 7.8 percent the month before, according to a report by the Lao Statistics Bureau.
The mild decline came despite rising prices for electricity, fuel and a range of food items including beef, poultry and fish.
The data highlighted that the largest increase in October was recorded in the housing, water, electricity and gas category, which rose by 29.6 percent. Other sectors that contributed to the inflationary pressure were education at 16 percent, communications and transport at 13 percent, and medical care and medicines at 10.3 percent.
These figures suggest that consumers dealing with higher energy and food costs could feel the impact of the price hikes, with the overall inflation rate slipping only slightly from September.
Lao central bank has set a target to keep average inflation below seven percent in 2026, a goal it says is essential for maintaining macro‑economic stability and sustaining confidence in the Lao kip.
Inflation Components That Unfolded in October
The report documents how each category moved in October, with housing, water, electricity and gas leading the steepest rise. This trend reflects the strong domestic demand for utilities and the higher input costs for service providers.
Education services followed with a 16 percent hike, mainly driven by higher tuition fees and material costs borne by students and families alike. The rise in communication costs, which includes mobile data and internet services, hit 13 percent, while transportation services – especially fuel‑based public transport – reflected a similar jump.
Medical care, covering both services and medicines, increased by 10.3 percent, indicating that the cost of healthcare supplies and outpatient services is also escalating for consumers.
With these developments, the central bank’s inflation target remains a focal point for policymakers. The bank’s aim is to apply prudent monetary policy to keep the kip stable while curbing rising cost pressures in the economy.
