In brief

The pontiff has been hospitalized due to pneumonia and has undergone various treatments while remaining in touch with the public.

Pope Francis has been reported "alert" following two episodes of acute respiratory failure that occurred on Monday afternoon, according to the Vatican. Medical professionals were required to assist in clearing mucus from his lungs, but the 88-year-old pontiff remained conscious and responsive during the procedure. Following these episodes, he has had to rely once again on an oxygen mask and ventilator to aid his breathing, although the Vatican stated he is "focused and cooperative."This marks the third significant health complication for Pope Francis within the last 18 days, as he was originally admitted to a Roman hospital with pneumonia. Just last Friday, he experienced a separate breathing crisis characterized by vomiting, for which he responded positively to oxygen therapy. On Sunday, officials announced he had transitioned to high-flow oxygen therapy but once again reverted to mechanical ventilation following yesterday's incidents.Due to his ongoing health troubles, Pope Francis has not been able to deliver his customary Angelus prayer in person for three consecutive weeks, with the Vatican instead issuing pre-written statements from his hospital room. In these statements, he expressed gratitude for the public's prayers and appreciation for his medical team. Catholics visiting the hospital have also been seen gathering to pray for his recovery, hoping he might appear at the window to greet them, as he has done in previous instances. The Pope was initially hospitalized for breathing difficulties on February 14, where he was treated for bronchitis and later diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs. Due to a history of lung issues, including pleurisy and a prior partial lung removal, he is particularly vulnerable to respiratory infections. Despite optimism conveyed by Vatican sources regarding his condition, they have underscored that Pope Francis remains in a complex medical state and is not yet out of danger.
