In the early hours of New Year's Day, a devastating incident unfolded in New Orleans, Louisiana, as a Ford pick-up truck plowed into a crowd celebrating at Bourbon Street, resulting in ten fatalities and at least 35 injuries. Authorities report that the attack happened around 03:15 local time, with CCTV footage revealing the vehicle colliding with pedestrians after maneuvering onto the pavement to bypass a police vehicle.
Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick described the act as "very intentional," attesting that the perpetrator, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, appeared determined to inflict as much carnage as possible. Armed and dangerous, Jabbar fired at law enforcement, injuring two officers before he was ultimately shot dead by police.
Witnesses shared harrowing accounts of the aftermath, with some recounting scenes of devastation as they exited barricaded venues. One eyewitness recounted, "We were walking past dead and injured bodies all over the street."
The FBI has disclosed that Jabbar, a 42-year-old Army veteran from Texas, had a flag associated with the Islamic State found in his vehicle, prompting an investigation into potential terrorist affiliations. Additionally, authorities disclosed the discovery of improvised explosive devices in the vicinity, suggesting that Jabbar may not have acted alone.
With a history in the US Army and a degree in Computer Information Systems from Georgia State University, Jabbar's background contrasts sharply with the heinous act he committed. His criminal record, however, includes previous offences related to theft and traffic violations. Tragically, among the injured were locals and visitors alike, including a student from the University of Georgia and two Israeli nationals.
Bourbon Street, the vibrant locale of the attack, is renowned for its nightlife and celebrations, especially during major events like Mardi Gras and New Year festivities, drawing millions of visitors each year. As investigations continue, the community grapples with the impact of this senseless act of violence.
