Dutch Police Nab ShinyHunters Hacker Amid FBI Data‑Breach Claims
Amsterdam, 15 September – Dutch authorities arrested a 24‑year‑old man suspected of being a key member of the ShinyHunters hacking collective, which has been operating since it publicly claimed to have stolen personnel data from the FBI.
ShinyHunters, an international group that originally emerged in France, surfaced last month when it posted screenshots of alleged FBI employee records, including names, badge numbers, addresses and phone numbers, on a dark‑web forum.
Police say the suspect’s laptop contained a “large amount of information” and documents detailing “two murders that were to be committed abroad,” raising concerns that the group may have been orchestrating violent acts in addition to data theft.
Dutch Cybercrime Chief Stan Duijf welcomed the arrest, adding that the group had caused “significant damage to numerous national and international victims.” The FBI has also praised Dutch partners for the swift action, with Director Kash Patel noting that investigators are working “together to solidify the evidence gathered.”
ShinyHunters has been linked to high‑profile breaches of game firm Rockstar and the educational platform Canvas, and analysts suspect it exploited a flaw in the Oracle cloud storage system to gain access to FBI systems such as FBIJOBS and MedLink.
While the Dutch court has not yet released charges, officials warn of further arrests if additional members are uncovered. The incident underscores the growing threat posed by transnational cyber criminals and the need for coordinated law‑enforcement responses.
