GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The University of Florida has announced the deactivation of its College Republicans chapter following reports that several members were engaged in antisemitic conduct. This decision represents the second time this month that a Florida public university has acted against a Republican group amid allegations of racism and antisemitism.
Earlier this month, Florida International University launched an investigation into a group chat involving an official from the Miami-Dade chapter of the Republican Party, which contained explicit racist slurs, antisemitic remarks, and misogynistic language. This chat included participation from students as well as prominent conservative leaders affiliated with the university.
University officials in Gainesville confirmed over the weekend that the Florida Federation of College Republicans had disbanded the campus chapter following their determination that some members had violated their rules and values, specifically citing a recent antisemitic gesture.
The University of Florida indicated that they are prepared to assist in reactivating the campus chapter with new student leadership once the Florida Federation of College Republicans is ready. This development is part of a broader trend as universities address and respond to allegations of inappropriate behavior within their student organizations, including a notable incident last fall where New York’s Republican State Committee suspended a Young Republican organization due to evidence of offensive jokes about serious topics.
