In brief
The Doomsday Clock has been set to its closest position ever to global disaster, now standing at 89 seconds to midnight, as scientists cite increasing threats from nuclear warfare, biological advancements, artificial intelligence, and climate change.
The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (BAS), responsible for updating the symbolic clock, has announced a critical adjustment, moving the hands one second closer to midnight—a reflection of growing global dangers. Daniel Holz, chair of the BAS Science and Security Board, emphasized that this decision is intended as "a warning to all world leaders." Originally set at seven minutes to midnight in 1947, the clock last year remained at 90 seconds but has now ticked forward due to escalating concerns. In a recent statement, BAS mentioned that this shift serves as "a stark signal" of impending peril. The organization cautioned that the world is dangerously close to catastrophic scenarios where even a minute delay in corrective action could extend the risk of global calamity. They specifically noted that the ongoing war in Ukraine, nearing three years since Russia's full-scale invasion, could potentially escalate to nuclear conflict, whether through poor judgment or accidental triggers. Moreover, the Middle East conflict poses an additional threat, with potential for a broader war erupting suddenly. The panel of scientists also expressed distress over the inadequate global response to climate change, indicating that countless governments fail to implement necessary financing and policies to curb global warming effectively. Further compounding these issues are emerging and re-emerging diseases that threaten various sectors of society and security worldwide. Disruptive technological advancements, particularly in military applications of artificial intelligence, have raised red flags, especially as these technologies are increasingly integrated into conflict zones like Ukraine and the Middle East. The BAS warns that the dangers of misinformation, disinformation, and conspiracy theories are amplifying these threats, complicating effective communication and understanding of risks. The responsibility to mitigate these grave dangers, they assert, lies chiefly with the United States, China, and Russia, who together hold the power to avert catastrophic outcomes.
