In brief

In a significant diplomatic development, India and China have announced the resumption of direct flights between the two nations after a nearly five-year hiatus, signaling a thaw in relations that were once strained by a deadly border clash. The agreement was reached following a visit from India’s foreign secretary, Vikram Misri, to Beijing, aimed at discussing a series of initiatives that could stabilize and enhance ties between the neighboring countries. Both nations are keen to promote cultural exchanges as part of this agreement, which also addresses improved access for journalists and provisions for Hindu pilgrimages to a revered site in Tibet.

Tensions escalated dramatically in 2020 when a border incursion by Chinese troops resulted in casualties on both sides, prompting a freeze in many diplomatic activities, including air travel. However, recent months have seen a gradual restoration of communication, highlighted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in October 2024 during a summit in Russia. This face-to-face encounter was the first in five years and came on the back of extensive discussions between military and diplomatic representatives aimed at disengaging troops in the contested Himalayan region.China's Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, emphasized the importance of both nations working together to reduce mutual misunderstandings and rebuilding trust. Following the Monday discussions, officials from India and China are set to collaborate on technical aspects to resume the long-suspended flights, which remained grounded since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. While routes to Hong Kong reopened after restrictions were lifted, services to mainland China were halted due to the complicated political landscape. As both countries strive for better relations, the renewed flight services are seen as a crucial step toward further easing tensions and encouraging greater connectivity.
