In brief

On Friday, a gunman fired from a car in Trappes and La Verrière, killing one and wounding five, many of whom were of migrant background. French prosecutors have placed the 39‑year‑old suspect in psychiatric observation to determine if he can be interrogated. President Emmanuel Macron condemned the attack as a racist terrorist act and called it a turning point for the Republic. Investigators found religious texts, a copy of *Mein Kampf* and drugs at the suspect’s home, while the sole fatality was a 26‑year‑old French‑Congolese martial artist.

A 39‑year‑old suspect is now under psychiatric observation after a car‑mounted gun attack that killed one person and injured five others in the Paris suburbs of Trappes and La Verrière.

Police say the shooter, identified as Kevin T, is being evaluated to determine whether he is fit for questioning. The National Anti‑Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office said the assessment will last about 48 hours and was carried out under guidance from a psychiatric expert.

President Emmanuel Macron called the incident a “racist terrorist attack,” saying the gunman had targeted victims because of their skin colour or religion.

Investigators have found a Bible, a Quran and a copy of Adolf Hitler’s *Mein Kampf* at the suspect’s home, along with traces of cannabis and cocaine in his blood. A police source said the offender had four previous convictions that had been expunged.

Les victimes included a 12‑year‑old girl who remains in critical condition and a 26‑year‑old French‑Congolese martial artist, Pengo Bossio Wangi, who was the sole fatality. Wangi’s club released a tribute noting his leadership and generosity.
