Kenya Reports First Ebola Death as Outbreak Spreads
Kenya has confirmed its first death from the Ebola virus after a citizen who had been living in the Democratic Republic of Congo for seven years was treated in several hospitals there and died in Nairobi.
Health Minister Aden Duale said the patient fell ill a month ago, was screened at Nairobi’s main airport after boarding a flight from the DRC, and was transferred to a local hospital by a relative. Tests later confirmed the Bundibugyo strain.
The outbreak in the DRC has claimed more than 4,000 lives this year, making it the second most lethal on record.
Local officials urge travellers to undergo screening and keep a watchful eye on health conditions, while medical teams continue to monitor possible contacts.
