Wicknell Chivayo

Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife Lucy Muteke died when the helicopter they were in crashed in the Marondera rural area, about 70km east of Harare.

Police confirmed all six occupants on board – including two pilots – died. No survivors were reported.

Chivayo, known as "Sir Wicknell," had amassed a reputation for lavish displays of wealth, close ties to African leaders and lucrative government contracts.

He had denied allegations of corruption linked to procurement deals, including a high‑profile solar power project in Gwanda and contracts tied to the 2023 elections.

Both the Zimbabwean government and neighboring Kenyan President William Ruto expressed condolences, highlighting Chivayo’s high‑profile presence on the continent.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are underway. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene following the incident.

The family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo said the family was devastated by the tragedy.

The crash marks a sudden loss for a figure who was a frequent guest in political circles and a source of controversy.
