An Iranian minister has told the BBC that Israeli strikes in Lebanon on Wednesday constituted a 'grave violation' of the US-Iran ceasefire agreement. Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh stated that Lebanon is encompassed by the two-week deal that was agreed upon on Tuesday, a claim disputed by the US and Israel. Khatibzadeh urged the US to choose 'between war and ceasefire.' According to the Lebanese health ministry, at least 203 individuals were reported killed in the airstrikes targeting what Israel labeled Hezbollah command centers and military installations. When asked if Tehran would also request Hezbollah to cease firing rockets at Israel, Khatibzadeh asserted that the Iranian-backed militant group had adhered to the ceasefire. Hezbollah retaliated by claiming it targeted Israel overnight in response to ceasefire violations, pledging to continue its attacks until 'Israeli-American aggression' against Lebanon ceases. In subsequent comments to the BBC Radio 4's Today program, Khatibzadeh emphasized that Iran had issued a 'crystal clear' message to the White House, underscoring the impossibility of expecting a ceasefire while Israeli military actions continue. He characterized Hezbollah as a 'Lebanese freedom movement' and confirmed Iranian support for the group. Khatibzadeh expressed skepticism about reaching a permanent agreement with the US and highlighted the need for all parties to respect the ceasefire to ensure regional stability.
