Equatorial Guinea’s Government Resigns After Failing to Meet Targets

Vice‑President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue revealed that the entire cabinet resigned after it failed to hit its goals. The government’s performance was said to have reached only about 10% of its objectives.

The announcement came amid criticism from the ruling Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea, which accused the administration of corruption, misuse of state resources, and a lack of initiatives to diversify an economy heavily reliant on oil and gas.

President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who has ruled since 1979 and appointed his son as vice‑president, said the resignation was in line with the principle that public responsibility must deliver results.

The new government is expected to be appointed shortly. Analysts note that the resignation could trigger political reforms but also risk heightened instability in a nation still grappling with high poverty levels despite its oil wealth.
