PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Authorities are in an active pursuit of the gunman responsible for a deadly shooting at Brown University. The attack took place over the weekend, resulting in the fatalities of two students and injuries to nine others.
On Monday, law enforcement agencies were seen canvassing neighborhoods for video footage and evidence related to the shooting incident, while also sifting through snow and dumpsters for any leads. The police released a series of videos depicting the suspected shooter, who wore a mask and is described as having a stocky build and standing approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall.
The FBI, which is collaborating in the investigation, has announced a reward of $50,000 for information that leads to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the gunman.
Providence Police chief Col. Oscar Perez addressed the public asking them to come forward with any details that might assist the investigation. This call for help comes after a person of interest was released when evidence indicated that they were not connected to the crime.
As officials continue their inquiries, recent details about the victims have surfaced. Ella Cook, a 19-year-old sophomore at Brown, known for her active involvement in student governance and church activities, was identified among the deceased. MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an 18-year-old freshman passionate about neuroscience, was also killed during the attack.
The shooting occurred amid final exams, creating chaos on campus, and igniting concerns regarding security measures. Governor Dan McKee has requested increased police presence in local schools to reassure students and families in the wake of the tragedy.
Community efforts for healing are underway, with a church on campus scheduled to hold a service dedicated to lamenting the losses and fostering hope. Parents and friends of the wounded and deceased are gathering to support one another through this horrendous experience.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities relying heavily on public assistance to close in on the suspect and ensure safety within the Brown University community.
