During the star-studded Golden Globes ceremony held on January 11, 2026, numerous celebrities wore distinctive anti-ICE pins as a tribute to Renee Good, who tragically lost her life due to a shooting by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis. These black-and-white pins bore powerful messages such as “BE GOOD” and “ICE OUT.”
The visibility of these pins introduced a political dimension to the proceedings, contrasting with the previous year's largely apolitical event. Actor Mark Ruffalo was among the first to adopt the pin, initiating a trend that resonated throughout the evening.
Following Good's shooting, protests erupted nationwide, demanding accountability from ICE and raising awareness of a related incident involving gunfire from Border Patrol agents in Portland, which injured two people. Demonstrations turned confrontational, especially in Minneapolis, where ICE conducted its most significant immigration enforcement operation to date.
Nelini Stamp from Working Families Power emphasized the essential role of civil society in voicing grievances, stating, “We need every part of civil society to speak up. We need our artists, our entertainers, to reflect society.”
The momentum for the pins originated from exchanges between Stamp and Jess Morales Rocketto, the executive director of a Latino advocacy group, who sought to leverage high-profile events like the Golden Globes to highlight pressing social issues. This marks the third year of activism linked to the Golden Globes for Morales Rocketto, who previously mobilized support against the Trump administration's family separation policy.
Mobilizing their network, Stamp and Morales Rocketto reached out to celebrities and attendees to promote the distribution of the pins, reminding everyone of art's historical role in advocating for justice. Allies of their cause have actively participated in lavish pre-Golden Globes events to promote the message further.
Aside from honoring Renee Good, the organizers aim to ensure that her name and the names of others affected by such shootings remain in public consciousness throughout the awards season.
In light of these events, Congressmembers have pledged to respond robustly, while ongoing investigations, including an FBI inquiry into Good’s shooting, strive to uncover the truth behind these incidents.
