In brief

A federal judge has collapsed a criminal investigation that had targeted Argentine President Javier Milei and his sister Karina over a cryptocurrency scandal, citing insufficient evidence of wrongdoing. Milei had defended himself by saying he merely shared information about the $Libra token, which saw a brief price surge before crashing and triggering investor losses. Opponents had threatened impeachment amid the fallout, but prosecutors agreed to drop the case. The president’s office maintains no involvement in the token’s development, and the anti-corruption office will determine whether any misconduct occurred.

A federal judge has dropped a criminal investigation that had targeted Argentine President Javier Milei and his sister over a cryptocurrency scandal.

The case was dismissed at the request of prosecutors, who argued the alleged actions did not meet legal standards for criminal deception.

Milei had stated he merely shared a link to the newly launched $Libra coin, claiming he acted in good faith when its value briefly spiked.

Within hours, the token crashed, wiping out many investors and prompting opposition members to call for impeachment and accuse Milei of a "rug pull".

While the president has not yet commented, his office insists he was not involved in $Libra’s development and that an anti‑corruption body will assess any improper conduct.
