The situation between Lebanon and Israel has seen a brief respite as US President Donald Trump announced a 10-day ceasefire, which officially took effect on April 16th at midnight local time.

The announcement comes after weeks of intensifying hostilities, where fire exchanges between Israel and Hezbollah, a Iran-backed militant faction in Lebanon, have been rampant. Trump pointed to the need for constructive dialogues between Lebanon and Israel, inviting both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Joseph Aoun for discussions in Washington.

Notably, there was a significant omission regarding Hezbollah in the president's announcement. However, Trump later expressed hope that the group would observe the ceasefire conditions. The ceasefire agreement includes stipulations for both Israel and Lebanon, such as Israel retaining its right to self-defense and Lebanon's obligation to prevent attacks from non-state armed groups.

The reception of the ceasefire has been cautiously optimistic from both sides, with Netanyahu referring to it as a chance for a historic peace, while Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam expressed hopes for the return of displaced populations.

However, Hezbollah has indicated conditions that include a complete halt to Israeli attacks, signaling a complex path ahead for sustaining peace. With the involvement of major global and regional actors, including Iran and the European Union expressing support for the ceasefire, the stage for a more stable environment in the region could be set, contingent on compliance with the established terms.

Additionally, even as peace talks commence, Israeli forces will maintain a security presence in southern Lebanon, creating a buffer zone primarily intended for defense against potential aggressions. Previous ceasefire arrangements have failed to stop the conflict due to continued skirmishes following the truce.

Moving forward, the success of this ceasefire will depend heavily on adherence by all stakeholders to their commitments and the establishment of a conducive negotiation environment aimed at long-term stability in the region.
