At least four Palestinians and two Israelis have been killed in a shooting in the occupied West Bank – the deadliest single incident there in months.
The clash erupted in the northern village of Tal, where some locals say they confronted a group of about 30 Jewish settlers who were allegedly harassing Palestinian homes. Others report that Israeli soldiers arrived and opened fire.
According to the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), the incident began when a security guard’s weapon was snatched by a Palestinian, who then used it against Israeli civilians hiking in the area. The IDF claims the guard was killed and that soldiers eliminated a “terrorist.”
Other witnesses contend that the settlers themselves began shooting and that soldiers responded only after the exchange had begun. Palestinian officials highlighted that four members of the same family were among the deceased.
Reports indicate that a 27‑year‑old IDF soldier fell during operational activity in the village; the circumstances remain unclear. Two Israeli civilians were wounded, and Palestinian soldiers were also injured.
After the clashes, the IDF announced it had raided a hospital in Nablus, apprehending two suspects linked to the attack, and that it was preparing for “extensive counter‑terrorism operational activity” in the sector.
In the days that followed, the Palestinian foreign ministry condemned the episode, linking the surge in settler violence to Israeli policy. High‑ranking Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, called for decisive actions against those who operated in the area, naming plans to demolish the home of the Palestinian shooter and accelerate the licensing of illegal outposts.
Amid rising tensions, political leaders on both sides warned that any further fatalities could spark a broader escalation.
