Ferry Sinks off Guyana Coast, Eight Rescued from 116 Passengers
A passenger ferry carrying 116 people has sunk off the coast of Guyana, with eight individuals currently rescued, authorities report.
The MV Barima capsized near Iron Punt while en route from Georgetown to Port Kaituma. A distress signal was received at 23:01 local time (03:01 BST) and triggered an urgent search involving both state and private vessels, according to Public Works Minister Juan Edghill.
Officials say the emergency operation is still ongoing, and it is unclear whether survivors can be saved. The 40‑metre‑long ferry was built in 1939 and listed with VesselFinder; it carried 250 life‑jackets, two rigid boats and six inflatable crafts.
Prime Minister Mark Phillips is spearheading the governmental response, while the Transport and Harbours Department holds briefings for maritime safety.
