At least five people have died, including a child, and over 450 others have been injured following a 5.5 magnitude earthquake that struck Bangladesh. The earthquake's epicenter was located near the Narsingdi district, approximately 30 km (about 18.6 miles) from the capital, Dhaka. As buildings shook and makeshift structures collapsed, frightened residents rushed outside to safety. Notably, at least 10 students suffered injuries in a stampede while attempting to evacuate Dhaka University amid the chaos.

We have never experienced an earthquake this powerful in the last five years, remarked Syeda Rizwana Hasan, the country’s environmental adviser. Reports indicate that three fatalities occurred when debris fell from a five-story building in the Armanitola area of Dhaka. Nitai Chandra De Sarkar, an official from Bangladesh's monitoring division, confirmed that 461 people were injured across the country, with 252 injuries reported in the Gazipur district, located north of Dhaka.

Sarker stated, Our main task at the moment is to assess casualties and damage. We are not yet seeing the challenge of rescue from the rubble or debris management at that level.”

Bengali Sadman Sakib, who felt the earthquake, expressed, I have never felt such tremor in my 30 years of life. We were at the office when the furniture started shaking. We rushed down the stairs on the street and saw other people on the road already.”

Another affected individual, a student named Abdullah, shared that he was asleep when the earthquake struck and described how “the whole building was shaking.”

The tremors from the earthquake were also felt in neighboring eastern Indian states; however, there were no major damage reports from those regions. The earthquake disrupted an ongoing cricket test match between Ireland and Bangladesh, causing a brief halt as players and spectators sought shelter. Ireland’s head coach, Heinrich Malan, who has experienced earthquakes before, emphasized the need to remain focused on the game while being aware of the broader impacts of the earthquake.
