According to Spanish authorities, Diogo Jota, the 28-year-old Liverpool footballer, was likely exceeding speed limits before his fatal crash on the A52 motorway in Zamora province. Jota and his brother, André Silva, 25, tragically died after their Lamborghini crashed, reportedly due to a tyre blowout, last Thursday.
The Guardia Civil police stated that preliminary investigations suggest Jota was driving when the car veered off the road while overtaking, leading to a fire that engulfed the vehicle. "There are indications of excessive speed beyond the legal limit," noted local traffic police. Preliminary analysis of tyre marks supports the conclusion that Jota was at the wheel.
A comprehensive expert report is being prepared for legal proceedings, complicated by the severe destruction from the fire. The accident occurred shortly after Jota's recent wedding to Rute Cardoso in Portugal, and the brothers were en route to the port of Santander for Jota's pre-season training with Liverpool.
Funeral services were held over the weekend in Gondomar, near Porto, as family, friends, and teammates honored their memory. Although initial reports suggested road conditions may have contributed to the crash, police clarified that the road was not considered hazardous and was suitable for safe driving at speeds exceeding 120km/h (75mph).
