However, the serenity of this community was disrupted when body parts began appearing on Gilgo Beach in 2010, suggesting a serial killer had been active in the area for years.
As rumors swirled about the identity of the killer and the possibility that he might be a local officer, the 2023 arrest of architect Rex Heuermann brought some relief to the anxious community. Heuermann's admission in court regarding the murders of eight women confirmed the suspicions that had haunted the community for over a decade. Craig Garland, a retired NYPD detective and Massapequa resident, expressed relief that Heuermann wasn't a police officer, stating, This brings great closure… that this wasn't a cop that was a serial killer.

Gerard Gentleman of St Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, noted the duality of relief and sadness as residents grapple with the closure of the case against Heuermann.
