In brief

A passenger vehicle lost control on the outskirts of Lal wa Sarjangal district in Ghor province, falling and killing five people while injuring 16 more. The incident was reported by Bakhtar News Agency and is the sixth road accident in Afghanistan over the last three days. Local officials noted the severity of the crash as part of a worrying trend of traffic incidents across the country.

In the late hours of Saturday, a passenger vehicle on a winding road near the outskirts of Lal wa Sarjangal district in Ghor province lost control and overturned, killing five people and leaving 16 others with injuries, the official Bakhtar News Agency reported on Sunday.

The vehicle was traveling as a commuter carriage, carrying a group of citizens heading toward a nearby market. Authorities say the driver was unable to maintain the vehicle’s path on the challenging terrain, which led the car to veer off the curb and roll onto its side.

Among the deceased were two men and three women, all believed to be passengers on the bus. The 16 injured ranged from minor bruises to more serious fractures, some of whom were transported to the provincial hospital in Ghor for treatment.

Officials said the accident happened on a stretch of road that connects the district center with the main highway, a route that is frequently used by daily commuters. “It is a tragic event for the local community,” a government spokesperson, Abdullah Fayeez, expressed in a statement to the agency.

This incident marks the sixth road accident that has been reported across Afghanistan in the preceding three days. While the government has not released a comprehensive list, other accidents have occurred on both urban and rural roads, underscoring a pattern of escalating traffic incidents in the region.

Local emergency responders arrived at the scene within minutes, but the intensity of the crash and the number of victims overwhelmed the on‑site personnel. Rescue teams had to extricate occupants from the overturned vehicle and provide urgent first aid before transporting the wounded to medical facilities.

At this time, the investigation into the crash is ongoing. Authorities have not released details on whether speeding, road conditions, or driver fatigue contributed to the vehicle’s loss of control. The investigation will continue to determine the exact circumstances that led to this tragic accident.
