In brief
U.S. officials have re-engaged with the Taliban to secure the return of Americans being detained in Afghanistan, possibly considering a trade involving a Guantánamo Bay prisoner.
In a significant development, American officials have initiated fresh negotiations with the Taliban regarding the release of several Americans currently held in Afghanistan. Reports indicate that the White House is contemplating a deal involving Muhammad Rahim, an Afghan detainee at Guantánamo Bay, in exchange for the Americans. Rahim has been accused of having ties to Al Qaeda; however, there are differing opinions on his level of involvement in terrorist activities. The Taliban have confirmed the detention of two Americans. One of them, George Glezmann, was taken while travelling in Afghanistan in December 2022. The second individual, Ryan Corbett, was seized in August 2022 during a business trip, having previously lived there with his family. There is also uncertainty surrounding the status of a third American, Mahmood Habibi, who was arrested shortly after a U.S. drone strike that eliminated Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri in 2022. Habibi's family claims he was detained along with others from his firm due to suspicions about their involvement in the strike.Despite the ongoing talks, U.S. officials have chosen to remain tight-lipped on the details surrounding the negotiations and the conditions of the detained Americans. Details about Habibi's situation, including whether he played any role in the drone operation, have not been disclosed.
