In brief
Airbnb has rolled out revised house‑rule guidelines that prohibit hosts from requiring guests to perform cleaning tasks normally handled by staff, such as washing dishes or stripping beds, even though guests still must pay a cleaning fee. The changes, effective from 20 November, allow hosts to set seven core rules and add only “reasonable” requests, while exceptions may apply for duty‑water limits or legal mandates. The platform is also giving guests greater visibility of rules and a clearer dispute mechanism. Many travelers welcomed the move after long‑standing complaints about burdensome chores and a viral TikTok clip that highlighted overly strict host expectations.
Airbnb Tightens Guest Cleaning Rules
Airbnb has updated its house‑rule guidelines to keep guests from being asked to perform chores normally reserved for cleaners, such as washing dishes or stripping beds, even though a cleaning fee remains mandatory.
From 20 November, hosts may set up to seven standard rules and any additional requests must be deemed “reasonable.” The platform says it may grant limited exceptions—for example, restrictions on shower time during local water‑shortage periods or for legal reasons.
New policy changes also give guests clearer visibility of rules, which will now appear prominently in reservation summaries, and offer a streamlined appeal process if a host’s request violates the rules.
The move comes after travelers repeatedly complained of being told to “clean up” after themselves, an issue that gained viral attention through TikTok videos by hosts Cassie and Jon who closely inspected rentals after guests left. Critics of stringent host expectations say the new guidelines will finally reduce the awkwardness of “unexpected” chores.
