In brief
An independent investigation has found significant flaws in the police response to the 2019 fatal crash of British teen Harry Dunn, underscoring the mismanagement by officers and the implications of diplomatic immunity for the American driver involved.
An independent review has sharply criticized the British police regarding their management of a 2019 road collision that resulted in the death of a British teenager, Harry Dunn. The American driver, Anne Sacoolas, who was involved in the crash, evacuated the U.K. citing diplomatic immunity shortly after the incident. The comprehensive 118-page report, unveiled on Wednesday, highlighted that local police should have taken immediate action to detain Sacoolas at the scene, as well as pointed out significant issues in the handling of forensic evidence. In addition, the report took issue with a senior officer’s comments on social media and public statements pertaining to the case, while also noting inadequate interactions between the officers and Dunn's grieving parents. The Northamptonshire Police, responsible for the investigation, issued an apology to Dunn’s family, acknowledging multiple failures throughout the process. The tragic accident occurred in August 2019 when Sacoolas was driving on the incorrect side of the road near Croughton, England, and struck Harry Dunn, who later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. The situation exacerbated diplomatic tensions when Sacoolas returned to the United States three weeks post-collision, resulting in a rejected extradition request from the British government by the U.S., citing concerns that complying would undermine the principle of diplomatic immunity.
