The driver of the Lexus that carried boxer Anthony Joshua is on trial in Ogun State after a Wednesday evening crash that claimed the lives of two of the boxer’s close associates.
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, now faces more than four charges, including causing death by dangerous driving and driving without a valid national licence. Kayode has denied all allegations.
Witnesses told the court that the group was travelling from Lagos to Ogun State to visit Joshua’s father and had been sleeping when Kayode was overtaking a moving truck. He lost control and slammed the car into a parked lorry, killing personal trainer Latif Ayodele and strength coach Sina Ghami.
Police say they heard there were no statements taken from Joshua after the accident. Craig Ajayi, the Ogun State motor traffic officer, stated that he had not contacted Joshua because he was unaware of his phone number, and investigations remain ongoing.
The trial has been adjourned until 10 September. The crash site, located on the outskirts of Lagos, was shown on a map released with the court’s findings.
Joshua, who has family roots in Sagamu, posted a heartfelt tribute on social media following the accident, writing: “I didn’t even realise how special they are. 100% it’s tough for me, and I know it’s even tougher for their parents.”
